Ensure your emails can be read on mobile devices!

Now that some 51 percent of emails are opened on a mobile device, it's high time to make certain that you optimise email on these devices. While the numbers from this last holiday season are just starting to trickle in, early evidence reveals that retailers benefited with 55 percent of sales originating from a mobile device, and a full 25 percent of these from smartphones. So what do we need to do to ensure that we optimise email in 2014? Here are a few tips to optimise email!

5 Tips to optimise email for mobile

  1. The shorter the better – People on the go don't have time to read a long piece, especially due to the size of the screen they are dealing with. You want your emails to short, concise, and leading quickly to a desired action. Shorter wins in mobile!
  2. Use larger sizes – Again, nobody likes to squint more than they have to. Make things easier on the eyes by using larger fonts, making your text at least 14 points, and headlines around 22. Also, colored or busy backgrounds on your email template make things tough to see also. Try as much as possible to stick with black on white.
  3. Make calls to action get noticed – Since you may have fewer chances on a mobile device to have your call to action noticed, make them stand out, preferably near the top! Use larger type, bigger buttons, and converting colors!
  4. Give thought to sender names and 1st lines – A lot of email clients (Apple in particular) make their sender names bigger than the subject line. Also, avoid having anything in your email template that takes up your first line, (like an unsubscribe notice) as these are also often visible.
  5. Make buttons a decent size – Ever try to click a tiny little link or button on your phone? Irritating, isn't it! Don't be that guy! Make them at least 44 pixels in height and width, so they aren't tempted to chuck their phone across the room! You want clicks, right?

Get ahead of the pack and optimise email for mobile devices with these tips.
