The Realities of DIY vs. DFY in your Small Business
When you're just starting out with your small business, the temptation is omnipresent to undertake as much as you can yourself. This is not only from a cost standpoint, but also a sense that you can do this. While it's smart to have a basic grasp on things, there are many things you'll need help with, and just don't make sense to try and learn.
For example, building a website from the ground up takes a skill set you probably don't possess, and would take time to learn. Best to hire that out. This isn't always true. What to consider when choosing DIY or DFY
- Ask yourself what you really want to do in your business. Do you want to be the one doing all or most of it, or do you not want to “work” in your business much at all, wanting instead to be the executive or visionary.
- Brutally assess your skill sets, and weigh whether or not it makes sense cost and time wise for you to do a particular task.
- If you decide to outsource your work, try to know who you are hiring, preferably through a recommendation from somebody you know. Also, stagger your payments to a new outsourcer, as an insurance policy that the work will get done.
- Think carefully before deciding to write your own copy, in particular sales copy and emails. These are two areas crucial to your income, and if you don't understand what you're doing, it will show in your receipts!
- Look to keep a unified look and vision to all your online properties. When you've got several people working on your business, it's easy to lose your look and become fragmented. Make sure you are clear about what you want to see!
At the end of the day you'll have to make a decision which style, DIY or DFY in your business. Just make sure the decision is one that's in the best interest of the business!
