What's Working Now for Link Building

These days every other person you come across will tell you that doing website link building in order to enhance your search ranking is dead.

While some of the old ways to acquire backlinks to your pages have undoubtedly become toxic, backlinks still matter, as confirmed by the Google link spam monarch himself, Matt Cutts: “Links are still the best way that we've found to discover  (how relevant or important somebody is) and maybe, over time, social or authorship or other types of markup will give us a lot more information about that.”

Since it's now apparent that the Wild West days of link building are over, they do still matter, and we've assembled some of:

The Best Practices for Link Building in 2014

Internal linking – Linking to relevant and useful content in your own own site is viewed by Google as helpful for visitors to your site, and this doesn't mean simply putting up a Related Posts widget and calling it a day. Link from textual content to other textual content, and steer clear of the temptation to over-optimize with multiple menus and tags.

Google+ shares – Posting to Google+ gets you pages indexed nearly instantly, and this could only help you in the freshness part of the ranking algorithm. Also they are dofollow links, and from a rather authoritative source!

Guest blogging – Getting your posts featured on popular blogs has always been a way to garner links, but have you tried being the blog that accepts the guest posts? This can also help collect links, in addition to helping you build authority and content.

Share valuable content on your site – If you find a thing that is going viral, and is relevant and useful to your readers, post it on your site (crediting the source!) and share with your audience, inviting them to share this already viral content.

Relevance and diversity – Google is all about relevance now, and so the days of getting a ton of links irrelevant to your niche and having that actually work are over. Obtain relevant links, and be sure to vary the anchor text coming to your site, if you've got any control over it.

Link building is still a must for higher rankings.
